ECOPOLIS

The Environmental Awareness Awards Ecopolis aim to contribute to the promotion and recognition of the increased and proven environmental sensitivity of State Bodies, Local Government, Private Businesses, Scientific and Research Institutions as well as Media Services. The rapid acceptance and establishment of the awards confirmed the need to support social participation and contribution to environmental protection and awareness, evidenced through specific actions, projects, research and communication activities.

ECOPOLIS Awards aim to create conditions of fair competition among participants in order to promote general environmental awareness as well as to demonstrate the social participation of enterprises, associations and all involved stakeholders in undertaking or supporting actions devoted to this cause.

Ecopolis awards for local government are addressed to projectss and activities organized by Greek municipalities. The aims of such projects or actions should include the protection of the environment and the local ecosystems or the promotion of actions that raise citizens' environmental awareness.

The sub-categories of ECOPOLIS Awards for local government are:

Sub - category 4.1.
ECOPOLIS Award for environmental policies


Sub - category 4.2.
ECOPOLIS Award for environmental awareness campaigns


Sub - category 4.3.
ECOPOLIS Award for environmental management (water resources, energy)


Sub - category 4.4.
ECOPOLIS Award for urban rehabilitation (buildings, squares, pedestrian streets, cycle tracks)


Sub - category 4.5.
ECOPOLIS Award for improvement of the quality of life (traffic, green, transportation, air etc.)


Sub - category 4.6.
ECOPOLIS Award for environmental investment programs (recycling, waste management, renewable energy sources etc.)



A qualified Selection Committee, whose members monitor all relative projects implemented during the previous year, selects the candidatures for each sub - category of Ecopolis local government awards. However, interested parties may also submit their candidature themselves in order to be considered for an award.

All suggested projects for each sub - category will be communicated to the public. A qualified Evaluation Committee will assess all nominations according to the announced criteria and will decide on the winning project and the municipality to be awarded. The awards will be presented to the public at the Ecopolis Awards ceremony.

This category of Ecopolis awards is designed to reward actions and programs realized by organizations and agencies that serve the protection of environment and/or raise citizens' envinronmental awareness.

The sub-categories of ECOPOLIS Awards for organizations and services are:

Sub - category 3.2.
ECOPOLIS Award for environmental projects

Sub - category 3.3.
ECOPOLIS Award for environmental education

ECOPOLIS Award for environmental investments


Candidatures for this category are selected by the respective Selection Committee, which monitors all projects implemented during the previous year. This category of Ecopolis Awards is dedicated to scientific projects that support the protection of the environment. The candidates for this category are chosen by the members of the Scientific Committee and the Scientific Task Forces of Ecocity from the pool of Greek scientists, scientific laboratories of Greek universities and young scientists with a PHD, whose projects were completed during the previous year. 

The sub - categories of ECOPOLIS Awards in the area of Science are:

ECOPOLIS Award for scientist’s research or study


Sub - category 1.3.
ECOPOLIS Award for young scientist’s project or research

This category of Ecopolis Awards was first established during the ceremony of 2009, when special prizes were awarded to undergraduate and postgraduate university theses that preferably focused on the assessment of measures for the protection of the environment. Especially for the year 2009, the nominations concerned exclusively the area of transportation. At the ECOPOLIS 2010, nominations included projects related to the areas of wind and water as well, while at the ECOPOLIS 2011 & 2012 the topics of the suggested theses were extended so as to cover all five ECOCITY action lines. Each year’s nominations are addressed to undergraduate and postgraduate dissertations that were elaborated during the past two years.

ECOPOLIS Award for Urban Transport

Sub-category 2.6.
ECOPOLIS Award for the Study of Contemporary Environmental Issues

Each nominated thes is evaluated based on the subject and its focus on the assessment of the efficiency of measures, actions, statutes and practices that contribute to the improvement of urban environment and quality of life in general.

All application forms should be submitted electronically. The assessment of the nominations takes place in late spring.

The members of the Evaluation Committees for each sub - category will be at the disposal of supervisors in order to guide them and help them select and customize the subject and the objectives of their theses so as to meet the eligible criteria for Ecopolis Awards.
